Try it before you look

  1. A system in the unknowns has the reduced row echelon form . Does it have no solution, one, or infinitely many? Write its general solution in parametric vector form, and its homogeneous system's solution set as a span.
  2. Without row reducing, explain why a homogeneous system of equations in unknowns has a nontrivial solution. Must every system of equations in unknowns have a solution?

Work it out on paper first. Then open the hint if you are stuck, and the answer to check.

1Hint

Everything you need is in Section 2.5 of the course book. Open it at page 27 of the chapter PDF; any theorem the question names is stated there, with an example worked the same way.

2Answer
  1. Consistent, because the last column is not a pivot column. is free, so there are infinitely many solutions: . The homogeneous solution set is .
  2. There are at most pivots among columns, so at least free variables (Proposition 2.5.5); a homogeneous system is always consistent, so it has a nontrivial solution (Theorem 2.5.9). A system need not have a solution: , , is inconsistent (subtracting the first two equations gives ).
